About

The Second Dragoons Firepit Foundation (formerly known as the E.E. Mixon Second Dragoons Foundation) was founded in 2005 by a group of former cavalry lieutenants who had served together in the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment on the East-West German border during the end of the Cold War. The group membership expanded in 2024 to include members of the Firepit National Security Seminar, a national security study group operating out of Cary, North Carolina.

The foundation is organized exclusively for charitable purposes in accordance with section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. The mission of the foundation is to identify projects and provide financial assistance to support members of the armed services (active duty, reserve, and retired) and their families, as well as individuals and their families who have played a significant role in assisting the U.S. military in our missions.

The foundation is uniquely organized in that 100% of all charitable donations flow to the end user in need of assistance. If the foundation incurs any expenses (Paypal fees, travel costs, website fees etc.), those expenses are covered by the founding members and not by your donations. In addition, we focus our programs in areas where one of our members has direct knowledge of the recipient of the assistance. We do not accept government grants.

If you support the work of the Second Dragoons Firepit Foundation, please consider sending a check to our Treasurer at the address noted below (in order to avoid PayPal fees), or Donate via PayPal

Master Sergeant Edward E. Mixon

Edward Earl Mixon was born on June 25, 1956 to Betty Mae Mixon in Selma, Alabama. He joined the United States Army after graduating from the Alabama Lutheran Academy in 1974. He was especially proud of his service in two of America’s elite units: the 82nd Airborne Division and the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. He rose to the rank of Master SGT and was a Master Paratrooper, Master Gunner, and a recipient of several awards, including two Meritorious Service Medals.

During his tour with the 2nd ACR in Europe, MSG (then SFC) Mixon married the former Beverly Moyd. It was also during this time that MSG Mixon became acquainted with the founding members of the Second Dragoons Firepit Foundation. Many of the troopers that MSG Mixon trained and led during this period distinguished themselves in the first Gulf War and later in ongoing military and civilian careers.

MSG Mixon was both promoted to Master Sergeant and medically retired in 1990. He passed away in 1991 and currently rests in the post cemetery at Fort Bragg.
